Chinese audio and video codec industry

The Chinese audio and video codec industry has accelerated its overseas expansion in the past decade, achieving global breakthroughs with the AVS3 standard as the technological core. As the world's first commercial 8K ultra high definition encoding standard, AVS3 has improved compression efficiency by over 40% compared to H.265, significantly reducing bandwidth costs at the same image quality. It has been adopted as a recommended standard by the three major international organizations ETSI, DVB, and IEEE, achieving a leap from 'technology following' to 'rule making'. Migu Video will use AVS3 on a large scale for the first time in the 2025 Club World Cup, covering hundreds of terminals such as iPhone, Qualcomm, and Dimensity, becoming the default encoding scheme for top international sports events. Tencent, Huawei and other companies use Tencent Cloud MPS and Huawei Cloud Audio and Video Services to export their self-developed encoders to global streaming platforms, serving over 100 million overseas users. Compared to H.265 facing patent pools such as MPEG LA and Velos Media (with a maximum annual fee of $4.5 million per platform), AVS3 only symbolically charges a patent fee of 1 yuan per terminal and does not charge content providers, completely breaking the 'coding tax' dilemma. Although AV1 is royalty free, its hardware support is limited. AVS3 has formed a triple advantage in efficiency, cost, and compliance, promoting China's audio and video technology from 'going global' to 'standard going global'.
